A butterfly damper, which is also known as a backdraft/non-return damper, is a type of damper that is used within HVAC or ventilation systems. This damper allows airflow to pass through in one direction, and will prevent reverse airflow.
The blades within the damper are lightweight, therefore when airflow pushes through it'll open automatically. However, when no airflow is present, the blades are held closed by a spring/gravity.
Using a butterfly damper prevents backdraft, cold air, odours and other elements from entering back through the ducting system.
